Links to Recommended Resources
The Internet is bursting with resources that offer information and tools to help prepare for your family’s financial future. The following are just a few sites that we recommend you visit.
www.collegeboard.com
This is a great place to start your investment learning as it offers a tremendous amount of information about college in general. The “Pay for College” section is particularly useful.
www.savingforcollege.com
This is an excellent site that offers information about saving for college in general and 529 Savings Plans specifically.
Another good resource for information about 529 Savings Plans is The 529 College Savings Plan, by Richard A. Feigenbaum and David J. Morton.
www.studentaid.ed.gov & www.ifap.ed.gov
When it comes to learning about financial aid, the government is the best place to start. These two sites are excellent resources - from the first you can download an extremely useful publication, The Student Guide: Financial Aid from the US Department of Education. The second site offers technical information about how financial aid is computed.
www.finaid.org
This is another useful site for Financial Aid information that includes a number of calculators to help you determine how much financial aid you may get and how much school will cost.
www.upromise.com & www.babymint.com
These two affinity programs are geared to saving for college. Both services deposit a small percentage of the total cost of regularly purchased products and services (groceries, food, phone calls, etc.) into a college savings account designated for a specific student. Over time the account grows and you accumulate money for college on items you are already buying. It’s easy and well worth joining.
www.irs.gov
The IRS is the best resource for understanding the tax advantages and implications of financing college. Here you can download IRS Publication 970: Tax Benefits for Education, which is filled with relevant information.
www.sec.gov & www.ici.org & www.moneychimp.com
For those who are new to the investing process, these sites provide easy-to-understand and comprehensive information required to help you get started.
